Mary Ellen Clibourne Cox
In the mid 1970's the Agency on Aging (SEVAMP Senior services) was developing. Mary Ellen seized the opportunity to help older adults and has never ceased her efforts to improve services for them. In 1987, the M. E. Cox Center was renamed in honor of her work on behalf of the elderly and is very well known at the state and national level.
Later developing the first assisted living facility for older persons needing various levels of care in Virginia Beach - Russell House, Marian Manor and Sullivan House. She secured funding for two supervised housing projects serving nearly 200 low income elderly adults. As a member of the Governor's Advisory Board on Aging for over 20 years, she helped ensure positive consideration of legislation affecting older Virginians. She was an active member of the Virginia Coalition an Aging, the Advisory Council for the Virginia Center on Aging and had served as a delegate to the White House Conferences on Aging.
